The Difference an Angel Makes (Michael's Story)

The below was sent to me in an e mail dated 3/19/09

Jeff,

I very much enjoyed our conversation earlier this week. You may recall that I placed an order with you several years ago, right after you lost Hana to that horrific accident. You were still in a daze at that time and seemed thankful for a chance to talk to a stranger from far away. When we talked earlier this week, you said that it was amazing timing for me to call again, because you had recently finished a tribute to her. Thank you for sharing that.

The pieces that I ordered from you this week will have a very special meaning to two people who have become among the most important people in my life. The "Weeping Angel" piece is destined for my dear friend, Marie. She is one of those people who puts on a brave face and a tough facade to protect the tenderness inside. The image reminds me very much of her innermost feelings during those rare times when she has given me the honor of letting down her guard and letting me see her vulnerability.

I fell in love with the "Guardian Angel" piece the minute I saw it. There is only one place in the world for it. It will hang in the bedroom of Marie's son, Michael. Michael should not be alive. He was born with a host of health problems including both hydrocephalis and severe spina bifida. He had more than 20 operations to keep him alive and still hangs on precariously. He does communicate fairly well in American Sign Language, but is completely non-verbal. He knows only a single, all-purpose word but is able to communicate his needs and wants to anyone who will take the time to listen. Michael has never has a bad day. His attitude and smile bring joy to everyone who knows him. He truly brings out the best in everyone.

I showed Mike several of your works and asked him to help me to pick out a special gift for his mother. He and I both agreed on the two that I ordered. He thinks that the Guardian Angel will be for his momr. I am sure that it will hang in his room, though. This is why ...

Mikey talks in his sleep. Not in words, because he has none. But in small, tender vocalizations that his mother refers to as "talking with the angels".When he wakes up, she always comments that she heard him "talking to the angels" last night. He beams with joy at her loving attention and devotion. The love they share is palpable. Their bond is inseparable. Now Mikey will have his very own Guardian Angel to keep him company and to watch over him while he sleeps. I cannot think of a more pefect gift for this young man who has given so much joy to everyone in his life.

I look forward to seeing the look on his face when he finally sees the gift that he chose. As I said, he thinks it will be for his mother. It is really destined for him. It is one of those rare pieces of art that feels like it was created for only one person on earth, and I am truly blessed to have helped it to find its rightful place.

Bless You, Jeff. And Thank You.

'An Englishman in LA' - The Story...

'An Englishman in LA's' Jeff Cane creates and recreates astonishing emotional art on aged wood tablets (various shapes and sizes), ancient tiles, charger plates and parchment prints that are more realistic than the originals! His image range of Angels, Crosses and spiritual artwork (most his own writing and photography), including marriage, birth & graduation documents have been best sellers for 14 years and have elicited very powerful emotions from many store owners, designers (especially) and clients over the period. His company makes ALL the artifacts the artwork adorns! If you want it 'old & realistic' this is the 'go to' company.

This is his story...

Cane didn't have to leave England, he had within 6 years (1979 -85) pioneered a bizarre idea to million pound fruition and in doing so created an entire new arm of the UK entertainment industry. The years that followed 1985 - '91 were joyously successful, the money rolled in. The problem was, everybody and their dog copied him. Like a successful jean company his company stayed on top of the pile (they are still alive today) but the money didn't seem to equal the excitement of the challenge of those pioneering days, he fully admits he somewhat sold out to the pound.

It was the late summer of 1991 and Cane's London party was very much swinging and he was successful and in control - or so he thought. A chance holiday, his first to Los Angeles, was to give him his second shot at pioneering - he had no idea...

He visited with his girlfriend, an accomplished London Aromatherapist. When asked as to what each did for a living, Cane's was somewhat understood, his partners replies were met with glazed looks, nobody then knew what an Aromatherapist did with these smelly oils! Cane realized after he's seen many a London client not wanting to leave the serenity of a massage to go back into the real world, how effective her work was and nobody in LA knew what this was!! He told me his stomach dropped so hard when he couldn't get the potential out of his head, that he felt like he had a hole at his midriff!

Let me just tell you this was a find of monumental proportions, his girlfriend was a beautiful Brit that had 4 generations of family in Kenya, many of them healers and was armed with pictures of her strolling through the African landscape with an unleashed Cheetah at her side, nose to nose and playing with the animal. The pictures looked as it they came out of the most expensive Vogue photo shoots. These shots together with her beauty and therapy abilities in Tinsletown intoxicated Cane's sensibilities.

"Oh my God what am I thinking" he tells me was all that ran through his brain, "how can I go back and give up all that security" - he did!

He was right on the money, within months of being here and after giving some trial massages she was already into the Hollywood 'hoi polloi' and then it happened. The very mindset that was crucial to the success of this venture was it's undoing, "I can't deal with these crazy people, they are driving me mad." Cane calmed his girlfriend down but after a few more days of the same this beautiful woman that had no problem with the wild African animals, could not be at ease with the Los Angeles ones. As he puts it "my nightmare had begun, one thing was for sure, I was not going back with my tail between my legs and be greeted by the 'I told you so' brigade."

Still with (some) finances in hand he thought long and hard as to how he could reinvent himself, he says, "the only equation I could put together that seemed feasible that I felt would work was, a gift of some kind, European in nature and it had to be personal...

"He was about to be right again...

"The most unusual company this side of the 15th century" came about when Jeff Cane decided to bring romance, chivalry and European history together to form a personalized gift that people could buy in Los Angeles - The City of Angels... That gift was called parchment poetry and was the infant child of what Cane now describes as an entire museum where you can take (and pay of course) the exhibits home - an incredible 17 year spiritual, medieval and recreational journey!

For his poetry piece Cane created (without prior knowledge) what he thought resembled real parchment (a thin material made from calfskin, sheepskin or goatskin) out of a particular brand of paper. He effected the paper in such a way that it truly resembled the skins of yesteryears documents. Eager to check his 'forgery' he went back to the UK and to the British Museum, which amongst other 'jewels', houses The Magna Carta. To his astonishment not only did his 'parchment' resemble many of the priceless 'gems' behind glass cases in their look, but the gold leafing he'd done almost gave him the ability to replace the real with his fake!

Unable to fathom where 'his gift' had come from he set about pursuing the rich and famous with his unique 'parchment' & poetry skills - sure in the fact that he had a very realistic medieval knack for recreating. It wasn't long before he was resident 'gift maker' for Leeza Gibbons and her daytime talk show guests. Several of which now own 'Englishman' parchments, amongst them, Pamela Anderson has birth certificates for both of her sons and Roseanne has her wedding vows.

Cane quickly moved to add to his ancient repertoire (now he had perfected the 'parchment) by recreating ancient art and framing it, this led to 2 major restaurants on Sunset Plaza in West Hollywood (cafe society hangouts) hanging his forgeries many recreations.

The next 'parchment' creation was a medieval and romantic fully personalized Marriage Certificate, a natural progression from his poetry document. This lavish gold leafed creation has garnered Cane more press than any item he has ever produced and still manages to do so.

Cane's unique entrepreneurial skills were tested when a colleague (still very instrumental in his life) suggested he make something more commercial as she was taking her first booth at the LA gift show and the current work was way to time consuming to go commercial. It was then that he crafted his first artifact and worked on a way to create it commercially whilst ALWAYS keeping the hand-made look. The result is the very accurate (to medieval standards) Wood Tablet, a humble title for such a versatile archival art vehicle. This artifact has stood the test of time - 17 years later it is still successfully in production in many and various sizes!

Everything 'An Englishman in LA' makes is hand made to order in The City of Angels.

In 1994 Cane made a very, very important decision that was to spiritually change his life! It was a time when every art company was pillaging history for angels and they were selling. Not wanting to be part of the 'herd' but not miss a trend, he went back to London to a place he'd never visited as a resident, a place that he'd heard of many times, 'A place of Angels'...

'Tourist' Cane photographed a Victorian cemetery in North London on a day that held many surprises (fully documented in the amazing true story 'A Place of Angels' that accompanies each angel artifact) - on that overcast and briefly rainy London day he had no idea of the impact of that which he had captured with his lens...

On his return to LA he put his Angels onto the market to astounding success - 5 years later he went back to, as he put it, "to take better photographs" - in that visit he also photographed the world famous Pere Lachais cemetery in Paris. What happened this time round in the London cemetery is told in part 2 of the story.

Cane realized that just to create on wood was not enough and when he uncovered some wonderful 16th century tile artwork he wondered as to how to recreate a tile, so accurate that it would again be right at home in a museum. Much ferreting and a chance visual as to how to make a finish that would enable him to use any artwork in history, led to the creation of his unique range of ancient tiles. His first bare tile was a purchase, it came from a 17th century French chateau, "it was beautiful". It didn't take long for him to realize the danger of not making the base product himself, the tiles dried up, the Chateau's stood - what was a fellow to do? "Make my own" was the cry and that is exactly what he did. Moulded on the original French tiles his replicas are exquisite - convincing enough to get him a full page feature feature in the LA Times - his second in fact!

I should perhaps explain that to get the attention of the LA Times editor, Cane sent one of his 12" 7lb tile replicas to her - cold! She responded within 3 days - unable to fathom why she had received this majestic gift with only a business card (the rest of the package, checked for bombs, anthrax and fatwahs had been lost along the way). She then uttered the words Cane was waiting to hear "I have received this lovely tile from you - is it real?" Intrigued that she had a 'great forger' in her midst she dispatched a journalist six days later. The young writer purchased over $600 of Cane's tiles as a result of finding 'Aladdin's Cave'!

Hot on the heels of his tiles came Charger Plates, these pieces, hand cracked (the images, Cane's artisans have to really crack the artwork to get the level of realism he requires) look as if they had graced the tables of Henry VIII's dining table and castle walls. When he recreates priceless plate images back onto these chargers the effect is astonishing!

Over the years Cane, a master medieval designer and recreator, has managed to garner much press and celebrity following, none more than with his Angels. The celebrity collectors & buyers of his work (that he knows about) are: Faith Hill, Janet Jackson, Ozzy Osbourne, Cameron Mannheim, John Melendez, Howard Stern (Angel wedding present (recent) from John Melendez family), Mickey Rourke & Pam Anderson to name but a few. Cane has also created parchments for several studios & movies including Startrek - Generations and The Truman Show.

His Angel photography has outsold every piece of historic artwork he has ever recreated, a feat he still does not feel comfortable with. I asked him about this "I never think of myself as an artist, for me the true image of an artist is one that can create with paints and a canvas such clarity that it was as if I was looking at a photograph". Cane wears his artistic hat much like a child trying a parents headware for the first time, give him some years and he'll grow into it. He does admit to probably selling more signed angel artwork (his own) that any one else in America, the strangest thing and it wasn't planned (by him), he's doing it all from - the City of Angels! He added, "I have figured out the reason and it's more so now that ever, an Angel is one of the few pieces of artwork that once the purchaser gets it home it takes on a life of it's own - it becomes whatever they want it to be...

I asked him about his dreams and frustrations as he flits between the 15th and 21st centuries. "Firstly let me say that I hadn't planned this incredible journey that I'm on and for much of the years that I have been doing it, it's strangeness bewildered me. I think I realize that I have been guided to my dream by the people that have reacted in such a major way to my work - that dream being, to put an Angel/spiritual piece of work into every home in America!" An admirable & monumental quest indeed but we are talking to a man that nearly made every household in the UK call his telephone service (fully documented). An astonishing feat that he started with only a single answering machine!!

Cane tells of a bizarre product week not so long ago whereupon he sent artifacts out to the following, which indeed highlights his creative genius. The National Cathedral in Washington, Barak Obama AND Howard Stern - surely there are not many companies that could create for such diverse clients... The Obama piece breaks the mold as it is a contemporary design featuring the President, Cane's best selling angel and two American flags and it's on tile.

Where does he go from here, "Nationwide, I have to get exposure in other states and markets, I'm fed up with being a 'well kept secret' - the commercial pieces I have created cater for virtually every artistic/spiritual need there is out there - hey test me." He gets very animated and passionate when his frustrations rise to the surface, frankly I can see why. He has been represented(?) mainly only in California and is 'chomping at the bit' to get out, he fully admits he is a creative genius but would rather find a new idea and design than a new store. Having said that, he hasn't done bad to stay afloat for 17 years on his medieval wits! He has several unique products & more in the pipeline, many of which are as he put it "Achilles Heel pieces, they elicit emotion," and if a recent client e mail he received recently is anything to go by, lots of it! (see below).

Message: I am sure you get emails from people all of the time to tell you how beautiful and truly special your artwork is. I purchased one of your marriage certificates at one of the happiest times of my life, I then had a dear friend pass away and another friend (not aware of my love for your work) gave me one of your angels, and today I went into one of my favorite stores and was amazed to see all of your pieces on display. I was looking for a gift for my father for Christmas and found your wooden plaque with the poem "Footprints in the Sand" and had to get it. He is a man of great faith and was diagnosed with cancer 2 days ago, this will have such meaning to him at this time.
Thank you for what you do,
Lisa

As a footnote to the above and this pays tribute to Cane's creative & Karmic skills, he rewrote this most famous of spiritual passages and is the 4th person to do so - his footprints spells the word LORD downwards. Each of the 4 letters starting a paragraph.

Cane realizes like most of us that these are 'difficult times', he has the creative ability to 'turn on a dime' and is doing so by creating some lower priced items and travelling further down the spiritual path, a path that he notices is growing rather than receding - all without sacrificing quality, a moot point with him. I must point out that Cane hand signs every artifact that leaves the premises, even if the artwork is not his (they are hand signed on the front), he's that proud of the pieces his workforce (under a very watchful eye) create.

From getting this close to him I can honestly say that the irony is, 'The Angel Man' needs some real angels of his own to invest in his sleeping giant, a giant with wings, very powerful wings that could take him and his partners an extremely long way...

A top journalist in the UK said during Cane's pioneering days "Someone should give this man a radio show," eventually, to great success, they did - the call now should be, someone should get this man's 'show' nationwide - it's his time, don't miss the ride...

Take a look at what he has brought to the market, take a good look, this is all the work of one man (and his team) and he's doing it all from - The City of Angels...

The most profound day of my life...

This is what I wrote 2 years to the day my Korean girlfriend Hana passed...

Wednesday the 30th of July 2008 was the most profound day of my life - I'd like to share it with you...

Hana was an avid golfer and would gladly have spent her days golfing...

I had been talking with friends on and off for over a year about where to put Hana's ashes, for me there was only one place, the golf course, a promise I made to her mother and myself 2 years ago but had not yet accomplished. This in itself is an illegal act and not permitted by law. Initially I thought I and some friends would play some golf and do it that way, unobtrusively. Somehow or other, hurdles and doubt got in the way - "do you really want to do this and 'look over your shoulder', that's not right, surely" friends said, that hurdle alone caused doubt in my mind, I realized that it wouldn't be respectful to Hana's memory to do it in that manner but yet I knew there was no other place for her to be...

The times we visited the countryside and the ocean were only possible if local food was included, in particular hot dogs at the beach - Hana was not fond of either region too much, so I really knew, even though it would be easier for me, that to put her to either would not be right. Maybe I knew in my heart that if I wanted the best for her, the opportunity would be presented to me, I nearly wavered but in the end held fast, it must be a golf course...

I was so frustrated in not being able to see how I could sort it all out that I actually asked out loud to Hana to give me a sign, somehow...

The next morning (after asking) whilst having breakfast, I was watching the end of a Tennis match that I had recorded the day before and when it finished I somehow didn't hit the stop button, what it ran into IMMEDIATELY (without adverts) was - a women's golf tournament and the first player on screen was - KOREAN!! I was so astonished that I kept rewinding to make sure I wasn't dreaming! That is EXACTLY what happened, I had never asked Hana for anything since she passed, I did the night before -I never watch golf, It doesn't appeal to me...

The message was approximately 3 weeks before the second anniversary and I made a promise to myself that I would finally accomplish the task - somehow. Wednesday, on the anniversary of her passing, I lit a candle and put a photograph of Hana, probably taken in Korea many years back, next to it. I then made a phone call to a nearby golf club to ask the question. Whilst greeted politely I was told that this is a county matter and the club could not agree to it without higher permission of the city. I realized that, as expected, I was going to get red taped all the way to a NO! I also realized that the more courses I asked, the more I would be alerting them to what I was going to do.I then called a neighbor (he knew Hana) that I knew worked at a golf course part time, maybe he could help - he said to leave it with him and he's call me back...

He called very quickly and told me that where he worked part time was the local golf course, our nearest, HAD GRANTED PERMISSION for he and I to do it and that they remembered her - I really cannot find the way to express how I felt when I heard those words, finally, finally Hana will be where she loved to be, oh my goodness, my sadness and gratitude peaked uncontrollably at that moment, I'd waited 2 years to hear this, the Golf Course had given their blessing - WOW I COULD NOT BELIEVE IT!!

I was now able to rest her with pride with my head held high and my promise to myself, her mother and her memory to be fulfilled!

I wasn't ready when my friend said that he had until 2pm and could do it that very day, everything came flooding back to me, it was extremely hard to face up to what I had to do, I still wasn't even sure I could DO it. I agreed, as that was the anniversary, and felt that something far bigger than me had already put my actions in motion. I sat down to have a little food and as I glanced at the table I noticed a sheet of paper with several 3 x 5 pictures of one of my Angels, the one in fact that was on the top of the beautiful box that Hana's ashes were in. I picked up the sheet and wrote a message to Hana on each Angel and cut them up into tiny pieces, Hana would not only be on the golf course - she would be with my Angels...

It was fitting that it was this course (I had no idea that my friend even worked there...) because I had gone round it with Hana on a couple of occasions, my only attempts at golfing, I immediately saw in my mind where I thought she would like to be.

He picked me up and as I walked to his car I picked a beautiful rose, there was only one left on the bush...

I don't know how to explain how I felt driving to the course, there almost aren't words, perhaps overwhelmed and numb, totally overwhelmed, yes that would be the most accurate. Even in that numbness, I really felt she was proud of me. I can't tell you how right it felt, I hope you can understand it through my words!

My friend got a cart and we drove to a part of the course, "hole 13" he said, "that's a nice one" - I told him I had no idea and wherever he thought would be great - hole 13 turned out to be EXACTLY where I had visualized when he told me we had the clearance!!

We waited a while and then set Hana free, through our hands, to golf for ever more, it was as beautiful as it could be, she floated with the angels I had cut up and we both said our farewells to her, I laid the rose on the ground.

I can't turn the clock back, I can't make it right, I can't bring her back, but I did make her release beautiful and respectful, and with my hand on my heart and my head held high, I KEPT MY PROMISE AND SHE WENT WITH THE UTMOST RESPECT AND GRACE - SHE IS GOLFING WITH THE ANGELS.

Somehow or other I really believe after giving me that message, Hana made it possible for me to take her to where she wanted to be...

This is exactly what happened and I wanted to be able to have a permanent place of rest for my story of those events, 'A Place of Angels' is that place.

This is an addition: Today, August 11th, nearly two weeks after I released her ashes, I went back to see the little permanent memorial my colleague had made at the spot. He had taken the metal tag that held the bag of ashes together with one angel I had not cut up and secured them permanently to a metal rail that runs alongside the Tee of the 13th hole. The Angel looks out over the area we released Hana's ashes. I wanted to see what I had written on this Angel (every one had something different written on & not about golf), I couldn't read it - he said it was undecipherable! We both moved away to look at the view and I said Hana is very pleased at this spot. I then turned back frustrated at not being able to read my own scribble - all of a sudden this one note read clear - EVERY HOLE ON PAR...

A Child's Guardian Angel

These signed art pieces came about as a result of talking a photograph of my large Guardian Angel above a bed (view). We have sold many of these pieces for just the same reason, to look down and guard a person whilst they sleep... Why I didn't think to do the same for a child until now, I have no idea. That seems to be the way my artistic brain works - mini epiphany's! I did the same with the Wishing Angel Candle.

Yesterday I took my first Children's Guardian Angels (view) to Valencia (in California), to an area heavy with mum's and their kids - I surveyed many of them. When I posed the question, "do you think your child would sleep better knowing there's an Angel in the room" the resounding reply was "YES" - even those children that were able to understand the question - replied the same way!

What I realized from these discussions yesterday was that these Guardian Angels are the perfect antidote to a child waking up in a nightmare or bad dream and certainly for going to sleep. A child's mind is a blank slate, one has to take great care what one writes upon it, this slate is not erasable! Every ma yesterday agreed if an Angel like these were in the bedroom from an early age it would give an untold amount of peace to the child "don't worry sweetheart, your Guardian Angel is watching over you - sleep tight"...

A Place of Angels - The true story ...

As a Londoner I have known virtually all my life about a special area of sacred ground situated in North London, but unlike many I had never visited it. Now as an expatriate living in California, I had on one return journey to England been drawn to see & photograph this Victorian Place of Angels. The place I talk of is a place of tended wildness set aside by Queen Victoria in 1839 in which angelic statues stand powerful, noble, serene & ever-watchful. To this day it is one of the most magical places in London!

What took me to 'A Place of Angels' was the need to look for 'new' material of an angelic and atmospheric nature (a lot of my current work is in recreating such images), little did I realize that in this old and somewhat overgrown gothic place I would witness such spiritual splendor, for I had no idea of the beauty my soul was about to feel & my lens about to capture ......

England being England, needless to say, on the alotted day it was pouring .... still I said my prayers (for the weather) and headed out. The journey took about an hour, by which time my request seemed to have been partially answered, the rain had slackened but the color was still gray, everywhere it was gray. I tried to put away all the Vincent Price images as I parked the car in the leafy lane outside the grounds.

As the remaining raindrops pitter-pattered on their journey from leaf to stone my eye caught the most amazing sight. Fumbling madly to fix my lens and at the same time figure the exposure (purists only use manual cameras... blast!) I attempted to focus before ............ a drip of water left the nose of an exquisite angel! During all this activity I had the most uncanny feeling that the angel was crying, my hand almost shook with what I was seeing through the lens. Click, click, click, I reeled off about 10 shots before the drip made its final journey groundward. I dont know how I managed to see that shot, let alone capture it - and as I stood there taking in the moment, no further rain touched the angel!

There was something very special & indeed magical allowed to me that gray & rainy day in London that permitted me to capture these wonderful angelic figures on film. In doing so, I hope I have been able to transfer the spirit & emotion of that moment.

There's one thing I forgot to mention, the area that a 'A Place of Angels' is situated in, is called....Highgate!

P.S. I went back to Highgate in the Summer of 1999 to re-shoot the Angels, this time armed with the knowledge of what my clients liked and needed. These images have been popular with customers virtually since the day they went on the market so we have seen their serene faces and statuesque bodies virtually every day of every week since 1994 - and one in particlar - the 'Love' Angel (used on the candle and many other products). So it was with great excitement that I entered the gates of Highgate once again to continue my photographic experience.

All I can say is that it is the strangest thing to have seen so many of these images over the years 6000 miles away in Los Angeles on a daily basis, now here I am confronting these wonderful stone creations as if they were long lost friends. It was indeed lucky for me that there were not too many people around at the time for surely I would have been thought of as most eccentric - and that's putting it mildly!

Now here's the strangest thing, as hard as I tried I could not find my 'Love' - I walked the entire place twice and having spent nearly 5 hours doing so she was nowhere to be found! I stood in total frustration, our most popular image and I could not find the statue - I had found every other one plus others I had left out on the first shoot but not this one, had she been moved, did she vanish, was she fed up of being photographed by me? My frustration got the better of me, I shut my eyes and virtually chanted ' where are you - where are you' over and over, I'm sure I said it out loud, and then I heard a tiny voice in my head say 'over here - to your right'. As I opened my eyes and turned to the right all I saw was a sort of large hedge type ivy surrounding the base of an old tree (bear in mind that Highgate is very overgrown) - something made me walk toward the ivy, I was virtually walking into it when to my amazement . . . . there she was!

I know I spoke out aloud, at that point I didn't care who heard me, I was absolutely jubilant and what a strange sight I must have been viewed from behind, pressed up to these overgrown bushes and talking to myself.

It is indeed a mystery to me how at that moment I was standing in the very place I needed to be to find that very special Angel. Highgate is enormous, it has paved pathways but you need to get off these to see the splendid statues, it is overgrown, winding and Victorian (see photo 'A Place of Angels'), not an easy place to navigate and I had no idea what Angel was where 5 years down the line!

What I hadn't planned on was that in the years since the first photo shoot the gardeners had allowed more foliage to grow and in this one instance it had totally obscured from normal view the one very beautiful statue I had to find.

Many people that have purchased the 'Love' Angel from us have asked its whereabouts, some, making a trip to London, have shown their interest in visiting Highgate. Now there is only one diffence - they will never ever see the real statue, for it is totally hidden from normal view - unless of course they happen to be standing in the right place and whispering 'where are you - where are you!'

The above is a true story, I have neither added nor left anything out - it happened on the day that the moon totally eclipsed the sun . . . . .
